“Lebanon Debate”
MP Bilal Abdallah, Head of the Parliamentary Health Committee, has issued a warning about the introduction of a new nicotine product in Lebanon: UBBS Nicotine Pouches Menthol. This alert follows a statement from the No Tobacco Control Program and a warning from activist Dr. Ghazi Zaatari.
In an interview with Lebanon Debate, MP Abdallah expressed concern over the entry of such harmful substances into the Lebanese market. He stated, "We need to understand how these dangerous products are being imported. Our main goal is to increase taxes and fees on these items, in line with international practices. If we prevent their entry, they will likely be smuggled, which is a key issue we are addressing."
He further explained, "This product is popular among young people due to its high nicotine content. As a doctor, I warn of its dangers, especially in Lebanon, which has one of the highest smoking rates and a corresponding rise in cancer cases."
Regarding the health sector’s readiness in case of widespread conflict, Abdallah noted, "The health sector is performing its duties with minimal resources. Minister of Health Dr. Firass Abiad is fully committed, mobilizing unions and overseeing medicine supplies and hospital inspections. He is scheduled to tour hospitals and health facilities in the Chouf next Thursday."
Abdallah also reflected on Lebanon’s ongoing socio-economic crisis, emphasizing the difficulty of preparing for conflict amid the country’s collapse. "Despite the challenges, we remain committed to addressing these issues," he added.
