“Lebanon Debate”

An earthquake measuring 5.4 on the Richter scale struck east of the Syrian city of Hama at midnight on Monday, Tuesday. The tremor’s effects were felt in Lebanon, Jordan, and parts of Turkey.

In response to concerns, Marileine Brax, Director of the National Center for Geophysics, assured "Lebanon Debate" that there is no imminent danger to Lebanon from this earthquake. The quake's epicenter is approximately 80 km from Lebanon’s northern border, and any aftershocks are expected to occur in the same region.

Brax emphasized that there is no need for excessive worry or panic. Although Lebanon is in a seismically active area, there is currently no evidence suggesting a high risk of significant future tremors. However, it is important to be prepared for the possibility of earthquakes, as this can help mitigate fear and prevent panic-related injuries.

She advised that accurate information about the earthquake’s source and location should be monitored, and any guidance from authorities should be followed. It is also essential to adhere to general earthquake safety procedures, particularly if stronger seismic activity occurs.

The National Center for Geophysics has recorded approximately 15 aftershocks following the initial 5.4 magnitude quake, which is a normal occurrence, according to Brax.
