On Friday, the Paris prosecutor's office announced on Friday that French authorities have launched an investigation into death threats and online harassment directed at Thomas Jolly, the artistic director of the 2024 Olympics opening ceremony.
Jolly filed a complaint after facing threats and online attacks due to his "satirical" interpretation of Leonardo da Vinci's "The Last Supper."
The portrayal has provoked backlash from the Catholic Church, far-right politicians in France, and right-wing conservatives in the United States.
Organizers of the Paris Olympics have previously issued apologies to anyone offended by the artistic representation of the Last Supper during the opening ceremony.
Jolly stated that the goal was to celebrate diversity and honor French cuisine and festivities.
He clarified after the ceremony: "My intention was not to be subversive, to mock, or to shock. I aimed to convey a message of love, inclusion, and unity."
Jolly refuted claims that the performance was “inspired” by The Last Supper, asserting: “I have no intention of mocking or distorting anything. My objective was to create an opening ceremony that was transformative and reconciling, reaffirming the values of our republic.”
He emphasized that the performance was not inspired by The Last Supper, explaining: “I think it was clear—Dionysus arrives at the table as the god of celebration and the father of Sequana, the goddess of the river.”
