“Lebanon Debate”
The National Center for Geophysics, part of the National Council for Scientific Research, reported on Monday that a 3.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in Syria, about 25 kilometers from the northern Lebanese border. The tremor was felt by some residents in Lebanon.
Earthquakes often induce a sense of fear and confusion about potential future events. So, what can experts tell us about yesterday's tremor, and should we anticipate further seismic activity?
Geological researcher and seismologist Dr. Tony Nimr states that the earthquake, which struck Syria with a magnitude of 3.4, occurred at a depth of 8 kilometers along the Masyaf fault, a segment of the Dead Sea Fault.
Dr. Nimr notes that historically, the Masyaf Fault experienced significant seismic activity in 1157 AD and 1170 AD, leading to earthquakes of approximately magnitude 7.3. He emphasizes that while this information is informative, it should not provoke undue alarm or unusual behavior.
