Finance Minister Youssef el-Khalil’s purported resignation from his ministerial duties has sparked controversy, despite clarifications from the Ministry of Finance's media office.

The office swiftly addressed reports from a prominent local newspaper claiming el-Khalil's resignation from the caretaker government, emphasizing that these reports were false and had caused confusion.

The statement assured the public that Minister el-Khalil continues his regular activities within the ministry, focusing on preparing the 2025 budget and fulfilling his obligations despite the government's caretaker status following the presidential vacancy.

Economic sources interviewed by "Lebanon Debate" underscored that since the government has already resigned, no minister can formally resign from it. They dismissed rumors suggesting el-Khalil's desire to step down, highlighting that his role entails conducting ministry affairs and preparing for the upcoming budget submission, which remains on schedule constitutionally.

Constitutional expert Saeed Malik confirmed to Lebanon Debate were to resign and the resignation accepted, Decree No. 83/82 would mandate the appointment of a replacement minister, in this case it mean the Minister of Culture Mohammad el-Mortada.

However, Ministerial sources indicated that the topic of Youssef Khalil's resignation has not been addressed in recent Cabinet sessions.
