“Lebanon Debate”
Today, a large number of depositors held sit-ins in front of the Parliament. They protested to discuss the draft law submitted by the “Strong Lebanon” bloc. The sit-ins were initiated by the Depositors' Outcry Association, arguing that this draft law is unfair to the depositors for several reasons, notably breaking their ties with banks and establishing a fund specifically for depositors.
Several speeches were delivered during the sit-ins, showcasing disagreement with such a solution for several reasons. They reiterated, “We will not accept any law that breaks the tie.”
Lebanon Debate learned that a delegation of depositors and members of the association met with Cezar Abi Khalil, MP of the Strong Lebanon bloc. Following discussions, the MP promised to amend the items the depositors consider unfair. Furthermore, he confirmed that “before taking any decision, the committee will get back to the depositors for observations.”
Information revealed that "there was a very big discussion in the joint committee on the items objected to by depositors. The committee in charge of studying the draft law began making revisions to address the concerns raised. Of utmost importance to depositors is the removal of clauses that sever ties with banks, which prevents depositors from suing banks that fail to return their deposits.
MP Abi Khalil promised the Depositors' Outcry Association another meeting within two weeks to discuss their observations on the draft and explore all potential solutions.
