Caretaker Minister of Energy and Water, Walid Fayad, has announced his ongoing efforts to resolve the fuel crisis through continued dialogue with Iraqi Oil Minister Hayyan Abdul Ghani, aiming to prevent Lebanon from plunging into complete darkness.
Fayad emphasized that the 2021 oil exchange agreement between Lebanon and Iraq, where Iraq supplies heavy black oil in exchange for funds held in a dedicated account at the Bank of Lebanon, was built on mutual trust established with the Iraqi government.
He expressed gratitude to Iraq for shouldering the consequences of delays and shortcomings in Lebanese administrations' payments, highlighting Iraq as the sole supporter of Lebanon's electricity sector under current circumstances.
Fayad warned that without prompt resolution for financing Iraqi fuel shipments, Lebanon faces imminent power outages within three days.
He clarified that while any expectation of Iraq exempting Lebanon from these costs is unrealistic.
Responding to criticism, Fayad urged political and media entities to verify information directly from the ministry to ensure accuracy.
He appealed to MPs to fulfill their legislative duty to facilitate the transfer of funds for Iraqi oil payments already in Electricité du Liban's accounts at the Bank of Lebanon.
Fayyad expressed regret over the critical situation, attributing it to the neglect of a crucial issue affecting all Lebanese citizens.
