“Lebanon Debate”
After conducting a sit-in at all correction centers on Wednesday, teachers of public secondary education, both contractors and owners, halted the correction of official exams. They were protesting Education Minister Abbas al-Halabi's failure to issue a decision specifying adequate correction and monitoring allowances. "Lebanon Debate" has learned that the teachers have since reversed their decision, and correction work resumed on Thursday morning across all centers.
Reportedly, the teachers withdrew their initial boycott after receiving a promise from Education Minister Abbas al-Halabi to increase the correction allowance by four times instead of three. However, negotiations are ongoing to secure a fair increase that reflects the effort required for exam corrections.
Sources indicate that teachers are advocating for a substantial wage increase this year, potentially ten times higher than last year's rates, due to the added workload. The exams this year require corrections based on five questions instead of three, necessitating greater effort from the teachers.
Last year's exam correction allowance was 6,750 Lebanese liras per exam, meaning that after the promised four-fold increase, teachers would receive 27,000 Lebanese liras for correcting a one-hour exam. For a two-hour exam, last year's allowance was 17,000 Lebanese liras, which would increase to 68,000 Lebanese liras under the minister's promise. However, teachers are adamant that even this revised amount may not meet their expectations.
The information underscores that any negative signal from the Ministry of Education could prompt teachers to reinstate their boycott of correction work, potentially returning the situation to its initial state.
