“Lebanon Debate”
The meeting of the National Defense Council was finally attended by the Army Commander General Joseph Aoun, who had abstained from attending several times before, prompting Parliament Head Nabih Berri to intervene.
From this standpoint, tensions between the MPs and the Army Commander cannot be overlooked, especially considering the superior attitude of the Army Commander towards the MPs.
Before the Army Commander's arrival, a large security cordon was deployed around Nejmeh Square, which infuriated Berri, seeing it as overstepping boundaries.
In this context, the question arises: is this behavior beneficial for him, or is he shooting himself in the foot?
Such behavior has been a topic of discussion for many internal and external parties concerned with the presidential election. These discussions explain the decline in the odds of Aoun's candidacy after he was publicly endorsed by Qatar and the US with secret Saudi approval. However, today he lacks backing aside from the US, perhaps supported solely due to his position as Army Commander.
On the other hand, Qatar no longer has a clear presidential initiative for Lebanon, with dozens of reserve candidates, some well-known. The Army Commander is just one name on a long list of candidates vying for the presidency for six years as it cannot be denied that Aoun's behavior has increased the chances for other candidates to enter the race.
