Dangerous Virus: A Potential Threat to Lebanon

Reports indicate the emergence of West Nile virus infections in Spain, Italy, and other European countries, with concerns growing about its potential spread to Lebanon, given the virus's dangerous nature.

Dr. Assem Araji confirmed in an interview with "Lebanon Debate" that the West Nile virus was first discovered in the West Nile subregion of Uganda, East Africa, in 1937. It is transmitted to humans through mosquito bites carrying the infection.

Araji explained, "Around 80% of those infected with the virus show no symptoms. However, 20% may experience symptoms such as fever, headache, body aches, vomiting, diarrhea, and sometimes a rash in 1% to 2% of cases."

He added, "In rare instances, the virus can lead to serious conditions like meningitis, resulting in death in about 10% of cases and causing severe neurological diseases."

Araji clarifies that there have been no reported cases of West Nile fever in Lebanon so far. However, he underscored the importance of taking preventive measures if any cases arise, particularly in controlling mosquitoes that transmit the virus across borders. He highlighted August as a critical month for virus spread due to high temperatures, advising the use of effective mosquito repellents and insect sprays in affected areas.

He pointed out, "The West Nile virus circulates in nature through transmission between birds and mosquitoes, affecting humans and horses through mosquito bites. Recent cases have been reported in Spain, Italy, and Palestine due to infection with the virus."

He clarified that the virus is not transmitted through casual contact like other viruses but can spread through blood transfusions, organ transplants, or contact with infected animals and their tissues.

Araji concluded by noting that “while there is no vaccine to eliminate the West Nile virus in humans, symptomatic treatment includes pain relievers and fever reducers, with severe cases requiring hospitalization and medical care.”
